Ranching is the practice of raising herds of animals on large tracts of land. Ranchers commonly raise grazing animals such as cattle and sheep. Some ranchers also raise elk, bison, and alpacas. The ranching and livestock industry is growing faster than any other agricultural sector in the world.

Besides everything that goes into your cattle decision, being whether you want to work with pure bred stock or commercial cattle, what you will feed them, what you will use them for; milk or meat… you need to find a tract of land large enough for all of your animals to graze and live. This should be your main concern when considering having your own ranch.  Unless you’re a movie star or already extremely wealthy financial assistance will be needed in the form of a ranch loan.

Finding a suitable location for the cattle ranch is critical. When you think you’ve found something, don’t forget to check county zoning and land use regulations to determine if raising beef cattle is allowed. A beef cattle ranch requires space to house the animals. This may include irrigated pasture, rangeland and dry lots. A corral is necessary for managing the herd. Plots of land are pricey, and capita necessary  to get started, land not included, can range from $10,000 to $50,000 within the first year depending on what type of cattle you want to raise and what kind of equipment you decide to purchase. Nontheless this is a hunk of change, and being a rancher is hard work… we’re talking 24/7/365 type of commitment, so thanks to all the ranchers out there! My dinner would not have been the same without you!
