Read MoreBlogger Local headed on down to the West Bottoms this weekend to catch up with one the Kansas City Area’s most notable wedding and anniversary cake decorators, at the Meet Me at the Altar Bridal Showcase. We caught up with Lynne Searcey-Mueller at the Faultless Event Space, where the Overland Park Native was running a booth to showcase her esteemed work to brides and grooms that are new to the scene in Kansas City. After 20 years of making cakes professionally in Kansas City, there is a good chance you’ve had some of her delectable creations at one wedding or another you just may not have known. Lynne is the one woman show who owns and operates Icing On The Cake, which she runs out a small shop at the intersection of 83rd and Metcalf.
Born a second generation baker, Lynne has baking in her DNA. The cake designer has an artistic vision to match the relentless desire she has to see that all her brides and grooms get exactly what they want on their most special day. When I spoke with Lynne she related how important it is for her to maintain excellent communication with not only the bride but all parties involved in the wedding ceremony. She stressed how important it was for her to get to the source of requests and expectations, instead of “playing the telephone game”. The wedding cake business has a tendency to be high risk and high reward. With wedding cakes the wrong shade of glossed cucumber could mean tears of disappointment or the wrath of a neurotic mother who just flew in from Chicago. The reward however is what keeps Lynne coming back for more year after year. At the end of the day she get’s to go to bed knowing that she was an integral part of a newlywed couple’s most important day of their life.
Icing On The Cake has developed an impeccable reputation in Kansas City. Lynne has stacked up quite a few awards lately including being voted 2010 , 2011, 2012 and 2013 “Best of Weddings” by the Knot as well as being given the “Brides Choice Award for 2011 and 2013 by the Wedding Wire. Most of Lynne’s reviews seem to point to a consistent theme, that she has the best tasting wedding cake in town! Besides her dedication to professionalism, Lynne also is a bit of a traditionalist in her approach to her ingredients. She prefers to bake using butter cream icing instead of fondant because to the Icing On The Cake owner, “fondant covered cakes are pretty, however may not suit the palette”. Lynne may be a traditionalist but that doesn’t mean she isn’t interested in expanding her knowledge base. She belongs and attends the annual conferences of the International Community of Cake Decorators as well as being a founding member of the Classic Confectioners Cake Club. For cakes of all sizes, colors, flavors and occasions, Icing On The Cake is the premier destination in Kansas City.
